The US Navy awarded a contract Thursday to Boeing to provide new submarines with an enhanced capability to disable enemy torpedoes, according to news reports.
The contract for the new class of vessels is valued at $3.2 billion. The contract was awarded in 2008 by then-US Navy Secretary Robert Gates.
Boeing Vice President for Maritime Policy Ed Boles said the first U.S. fleet of the new class of vessels would arrive “as early as 2013.”
The vessels will be about 30 percent larger than the current U.S. Navy fleet of 15 ships including the USS New Orleans, the USS Mahan, the USS New Providence, USS Washington and the USS Carl Vinson.
“The Navy and Boeing [are] building a new class of surface combatants to replace America’s aging surface combatants and to provide a new platform for the Navy to engage the global threat environment,” Boles said in a statement.
The new ships will be built in San Diego, Calif.
The Boeing contract will be known as the Advanced Surface Combatant Class Modification and was approved at the Navy’s April 25 meeting to award contracts worth US$18.7 billion to ship builders.
The Advanced Surface Combatant Class refers to ships, not submarines, according to the Defense Department’s Fiscal Year 2011 Defense Budget.
However, the Navy has already expressed concerns about the new class saying they must be able to defend their ship and crew against all attacks, without the benefit of being able to destroy enemy submarines.
According to the Navy, the first Advanced Surface Combatant Class submarines will be the USS Ponce, the USS Princeton and the USS Princeton (CM1) in 2013, followed as early as 2014 by the USS John C. Stennis.
