Were they “free” to walk around and go anywhere on the beach? Well, let’s first ask the questions, right? Why did they do it? It’s simple, really: They did not have a choice. I remember my father’s reaction when he learned the answer. He was appalled when I told him. I was, too! The reason was simple: The freedom that they were expressing, that they were living for, was nothing less than the freedom to be left alone. The freedom to do what is natural for them to do is what they had and so when we ask why they did how they do what they do and have had so much freedom, they say, “They had no choice.” It’s only when we begin to look at the reason why they lived that we realize that in fact it was not the choice. It wasn’t even the freedom that they had. They had no choice — but the choice was the freedom to do what is natural for them. The rest is history.
So yes, it was the freedom to be left alone — to be left for the time when a better future awaited them, whether it was the future of Cuba or the best of the United States. It is because they had no choice that they felt that they were no longer living in Cuba, that they had been left to the elements with one last chance to achieve the freedom, the equality and the independence they had earned.
But it was also the freedom to be free to go as they pleased anywhere they desired. If they chose to go in their private cars, whether it was an airport, a car dealership booth or even on a road, to make the drive without having to cross a military border or an international border to make it, or if they chose a secluded beach or secluded mountain, or if they chose to take an airplane — whatever they chose to do, it was the right of every Cuban to do it in any manner they chose to do it.
There is no other aspect of the Cuban Revolution as complex as that. Cuba was left with no choice but to create its own system, their own system, as much as the United States was left with no choice but to create its own system for the free flow of the United States. For it was only because they had no choice that they felt and acted the way that they did, that they had a future with no longer being trapped outside of the United States.
