Where is your favourite race card?
I’m more of a race card man, where I like to stick to the classics and I’m more a ‘run the table’ type of guy so I’d go for my top 5 or 7. I’m never really a fan of ‘new player’. I’ll try to run those, but I’ve been around a good long while! In that respect, I’m more into the classics than the new player. In the classics I want to try to win every race and then go down to 3 or 4. In my mind, the modern classics are the best because of the structure of the course, the weather conditions and the fact that you can finish with lots of points. I love those races.
I think that’s one of the more interesting points which you brought up in your interview: ‘To be honest, I’ve never run the best races. What I really like is the fact that my mind is the most open when it comes to racing and to come up with a list of top races to run all season. Then I’ll see.’ Do you ever run an injury and wonder, ‘What happened’ and then run the same race?
Well, I haven’t run injuries in some time, but there’s a few recent examples of injuries I’ve had which I can’t really comment on at all. As you might expect from a professional athlete you do have some sort of injury that comes along and you have some sort of stress reaction. I’ve had it in the past and it had the potential to be catastrophic. So then it’s a matter of just getting back and doing a little rehab and just learning to go and play again. I’m able to do that and I was the only footballer in England to be part of the England squad that qualified for the 2010 World Cup – so it’s definitely helped.
What do you think is your biggest attribute? What is your main strength?
I guess that when someone is coming across the course, I think you can get a general sense for the rider. They’ll know exactly what they’re looking for out of me and just kind of go with that. It’s really all down to getting in and getting on with the job and really enjoying the position you’re in. I’m not particularly a physical racer, but I do think I have a pretty good bike fit which allows me to do that, so it really is down to what makes me tick.
