As I watch the rise of “liberal feminism”, something happens to me that is just so funny – feminism is now the same thing as black feminism, the other is not the same thing as male feminism.
First there was the term black feminism, it had it’s beginnings with a study by Lola Babb from Princeton. In the original publication, Babb identified four types of feminism, “Black feminism” was not a very popular choice; it was only used by women that worked outside of the traditional feminist movement. When the term “black feminism” replaced the Black Power ideology, it was adopted by a larger group of feminists; some women, like Susan Brownmiller, started calling themselves “Black feminists.” After all, women have historically been oppressed by men and not just by white men. It is not like women have never been oppressed by anyone, they have.
Fast-forward to now, and feminists are the very same as a group of black women.
The idea of black feminism comes from Black Lives Matter, in an interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, the movement says, “If you don’t think your life matters, that you should really be out there taking action, fighting for civil rights, supporting racial justice, this is what you are.”
Friedman goes on to say, “You should feel like what you’re doing has a purpose, and it’s not just a matter of being outraged about some event – it’s what it does to your life and it does to the lives of so many people.”
Of course not. There is no “purpose” to feminism that is not anti-white. “If you don’t think your life matters, that you should really be out there taking action, fighting for civil rights, supporting racial justice, this is what you are” is basically a rallying cry for feminists and is about taking action. But, is it really?
The fact is feminists are the same way many men are, trying to gain more power through their power. There isn’t really any difference between a man and a woman in this regard. What is different is how these women take this power. A black woman
