Is it the horse or the race?
It’s actually more important than the horse at some people’s consideration, when it comes to winning an award or winning a race. I’m a true fan of horse racing and not a fan of some of the others that are running.
What has your family experience been like watching horse racing over the years?”
The most important thing is that we watched it with our children. I didn’t like it at first but I had a chance to go to a few races. The best part was watching them run. My son, our oldest son, was born in August, and I couldn’t imagine running him when the horse was running behind with me and my husband running a race. As I watched him run, it was really cool to see how fast he ran on the track and also on a nice country road.
When I watched him run on the track, I also knew that he could do something great on a thoroughbred if he was given the proper training. We have always admired thoroughbreds. I saw one recently that finished the New York State Championship and I’m really proud that he is a champion.
Your son is 14 years of age and I’m sure you’re looking forward to seeing him take over and lead your family as they lead the horse racing business for decades to come. Any advice on what to look forward to over the next few years?
There were so many great things that we did with him. He learned racing skills at such a young age and I love that he is a great listener. To have him be the manager of my racecar (for training purposes) is a great adventure and something I will be forever thankful for. I don’t know how to thank everyone equally, but there have been really amazing people in my business and in the riding world who have helped him.
What advice would you give a young horse trainer?
What you do with a young trainer is very important. It’s important that they are not only young, but also know what to look for when deciding to keep a young horse. I’m a coach as well so I also know what to look for. You just don’t know what to look for until you have gone through it to the point that you are really getting to know some really young horses.
