It’s been six long years since we started The Sims, but in that time we’ve seen countless new games and expansions arrive on the platform. But while we might have become accustomed to some of our favorite franchises, there have been a few that have slipped through our fingers, like The Sims 3. Today, however, the franchise’s creator, Maxis, has finally announced the long-awaited sequel. This isn’t a slight against this game, but it’s something else — and when that happens, it’s not the kind of thing that happens.
The Sims 4 comes out today from Electronic Arts, and the game is being billed as a “return to familiar territory,” but as the first official glimpse at the game shows us, it’s as much about nostalgia as it is about new features. The first trailer shows off a lot of familiar concepts, like a house full of dolls (complete with personalities and personal quests) or a playground filled with little creatures — not to mention the return of the Sims’ famous “poodle” dog. The trailer also shows off a lot of familiar themes, from the use of music to show the mood of the game environment, as well as having it turn to night, day, and night cycles instead of just a specific day of the week.

The game’s main focus is the creation of Sims, although there’s also a collection of new features aimed at bringing the gameplay into the modern world (like using tablets and the cloud to store your digital creations).
In the current game, you have a huge set of tools at your disposal. Each Sim has the ability to choose between six different styles of clothing. You can pick clothing from multiple colors so you know what to find next. On top of that, you can craft your own clothes and accessories — or combine items you already own with new ones designed specifically for your Sims. There’s also a “fashion system,” which lets you find clothing that’s both in style and appropriate to the environment it’s in; for example, you can find outfits that make children happy while looking stylish on you.
But unlike the previous game, the new design isn’t simply a matter of picking which items to go for, because you’ll be able to take those changes on a more permanent basis by editing your Sims’ clothing and outfits. That means you could swap out a certain outfit in one week and end up with new one every two weeks. Also, unlike the first game, there’s no limit on what
