It’s not often that a player of Patrick Sharp’s caliber will appear on a billboard outside of a mall parking lot, but what if that billboard is in the middle of Buffalo, New York and you were given a little piece of Sharp’s journey into hockey.
There might have been an NHL player who came out of nowhere, but only he ever had the opportunity to join the Buffalo Sabres.
His name is Patrick Sharp.
There’s a reason he’s not just called Patrick Sharp. He was Patrick Sharp’s name, and for as much as we might have looked the other way as the NHL signed the former NHL All-Star, it wasn’t necessarily meant to be. It was done for a reason.
Sharp had a great first season in Dallas, but he was coming off two knee surgeries, and despite his stellar play, he was still just 24 years old when the Dallas Stars called him up from the American Hockey League.
That put a lot of pressure on him, and he ended up playing a total of 60 games with the Texas Stars that season and then another 12 with the Dallas Marlies the next season.
He found himself playing for this great Stars organization, but his first two years with the Stars were going far less well than he’d like to admit. And as the season went on, the Stars were just simply too dominant to take the pressure off of.
The Dallas team Sharp played for was a huge reason why he never let up and did his best to make up for that first year
