Most people think it would be the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or, of course, the University of Michigan, but I don’t think either are the best. I’d say the University of Colorado at Boulder, but I think that’s just because I’ve always wanted to shoot with more of a film school.
Where was the best college for learning to shoot stills? I found the most unique and unique way of learning to shoot stills. I had one instructor on campus who worked at Magnum, who specialized in still photography. He would let you get your stills prints done on a Canon 7D, and then he would have you come over and take stills film in a large format. You would spend 12 or 13 hours just doing that. That was my one experience that really helped me learn.
Were you the best or the worst student at any of the colleges I mentioned? Probably in my sophomore year. I think I had the most questions because I thought I’d only go to University of Illinois. I was actually getting some of the best grades but the worst time is probably a two week week when we didn’t shoot film and we just filmed everything.
How many movies had you shot as far as commercials? About 25 commercials since I’ve been making stills ever since I started making movies with my parents. It really just depends on what I’m shooting and where I’m shooting. If I’m just shooting stills I think it’s always a film company or studio. I know they have commercials and music videos but I don’t know if they have things for still photography.
Any other tips or movies you want to play with? Yeah that’s a really tough one. I didn’t get the chance to put a movie together until I was 21-22 as a part of the production crew with the movie High School Musical. I’d seen the movie when I was really young so I kind of knew the premise and all of these parts of it… then when I got the chance at 23 and I went to Chicago, it was a very different movie-going experience from High School’s, so I’ll never be able to do that.
Can’t you only shoot film at a university? Yeah I had a lot of films that I couldn’t make, but I’m not going to tell people that when they ask me. I think people should be able to make their own choices for their personal experience but for me personally, I’d rather have a film job at
