The Flapper was an open-backed blouse. I think you could wear it with anything, even with your shoes off.
Who wore blue flappers?
You might have heard that it was Jean Shrimpton. There’s no one I could think of who’s more blue than Jean Shrimpton [laughs].
Tell us about what he wore.
It was one of these flappers with a waistband. I think there was a lot of money in it.
What did real flappers wear?
I think the blue ones, like the ones you’ve seen here, that’s all I can remember. There were a lot of guys with white pants and one with a shirt, and we were always in the back. The girl I went with had her own dress to go with it.

What’s the difference between vintage and contemporary flappers?
To get more contemporary, you need to know what you’re looking for. What are you trying to achieve? Vintage flappers have more of a high-fashion feel to them, as opposed to high-fashion with a little bit of an old school feel to them. Vintage flapper girls looked like they were a little bit on the high school side of the school girls. They were a little bit out of place. That’s why a lot of collectors are kind of put off by vintage flappers because they don’t look as nice as contemporary ones.
What are your favorite vintage flapper pieces?
There’s this one of my favorite. I think it might be a French piece made out of fur, and we have a lot of animal pieces we like. A lot of the time the fur pieces will always be on the high-fashion side, but with a little bit of a high-fashion look to them, too. We have a piece called The New Dandy which is made out of gold with beads, and the colors are kind of a bit off between the antique pieces, but they’re the pieces we really love. Those are two of the ones that we really like.
What’s your favorite vintage flapper outfit for the pool?
It’s this striped flapper with a white shirt. The colors are so beautiful. A bunch of other people like it, too, and it’s a very elegant style.
