As mentioned earlier, weight for age is a very reliable predictor for a horse’s performance for a specific period of time, especially for a short- or intermediate-length racecourse (the race that matters most) when the horse is being judged for weight. It is important to notice that the horses we are looking at in the database all have similar weights for age, so the average of those horses’ weights is always a reliable indicator for their overall fitness in a specific season. . .
In one sense, a horse can lose weight at any point in the racing season and still be judged to be in good condition by a racehorse judge. This is a bit of a stretch, but it’s important to keep in mind that some races are much shorter than others, and the weight for age tables will simply work when those races are over, and there is room to adjust for the size of the race.
