Yes. Since the publication of our book, we’ve seen a change in attitude towards photography amongst students in the U.K. and elsewhere.
A large number of them have become more adventurous, and the experience has changed how they perceive the world in which they live and work. There has been a change from “I am a photographer, I can always rely on the knowledge I have had so far to create beautiful images” to “Photography is a process, and learning it is more than a hobby. It will change the rest of your life.”
In addition, there has been a marked increase in students wanting to take their own photographs, which in most cases is motivated by self-advancement. That’s particularly true in a university environment, which is known for setting limits and inhibitions.
Can photography be a career?
Not necessarily. Like every other aspect of life, it can be challenging to make the transition between working in a commercial setting and taking a personal journey, but all the more rewarding if you feel that your work is progressing creatively (as opposed to simply being made up of other people’s work).
“A personal journey, like a career, is when you have the chance to try and take different approaches to each subject.”
But that’s not to say that it is necessarily easy to become a well-known professional photographer.
In my experience, for someone who is new to this industry, it is difficult to gain traction, as all new subjects are expected to be fully explored before they can be published, as opposed to being seen as a challenge or part of some larger photography project.
What do you advise aspiring photographers to try?
I believe that photography can be an incredibly rewarding profession, and that it requires a certain amount of commitment and a level of expertise beyond what most people are willing to accept. But also, for anyone who considers themselves photography professional in the future, there are a few steps that can help:
Be honest – If you are looking to take photographs, make sure you are upfront about your intention. If you want to use your photography as a learning tool, be upfront about what you have learned so far and share the experiences you have had. For instance, if you learned that taking pictures with your camera was something that interested you, tell others about that.
Look into the medium – It might not be a bad idea to try and learn as much about your subject as possible prior to taking a photograph
