The number of refugees and asylum seekers who were granted a legal status in the UK is expected to surpass 800,000 by the end of the year, according to the latest government figures.
The Office for National Statistics said that the number of asylum seekers on the British mainland had fallen by 3 per cent since 2013, while the number of people granted asylum here had increased by 5 per cent.
The number of asylum applications in England and Wales reached 2,006 in the final three months of 2014, up from 1,929 in the final three months of 2013 – the lowest number since records began in 1975.
In Scotland, the figure for the final three months of 2014 was also down from 1,985.
The figures for Scotland were also compared to 2013 and showed that a decrease in asylum applications in 2014 saw applications come down by 11 per cent – the biggest drop since the early 1990s. It is understood that the latest figures are not yet finalised as they are still under review.
Figures on the number of requests made have also been released to coincide with the publication of new annual data from the Home Office – the annual Crime Survey for England and Wales – which shows a slight increase in the numbers of crimes committed by people claiming asylum, although they are still more than 60 per cent lower than three years ago.
Last year, around 2,850 asylum claims were made in England and Wales. This had increased by just over 30 per cent since 2002. Figures from the Scottish Crime Survey suggest a similar result.
Last year, 4,739 asylum seekers were granted asylum. This had increased by just over 10 per cent since the previous survey in 2004.
In addition, there is a significant increase in the number of people who have arrived through other means. Around 1,000 people from Romania, Bulgaria and Romania were granted asylum, meaning that around one in five asylum requests is now going to asylum seekers from the former communist nations of Eastern Europe since 2004. In contrast, around 1,000 asylum seekers from Afghanistan have been granted asylum in the last five years, suggesting a decline in asylum seeker numbers.
