No, in the UK there is no restriction on growing saffron, although it can be an expensive way of growing saffron. (If only it were the same in our own country!)
Why don’t you sell saffron, or do you have some that makes you wealthy?
If we wanted to, we could. With a small business that takes only £300 per harvest, we could make lots more (for a while we might!) of that lovely red saffron, for example.
How do I grow saffron at home right now?
This is a very simple project, and I can give you all the information you need to do it. I recommend that you purchase the right size plants, and follow the planting advice here. Then make the base for these plants, using either a clay pot bottom, a piece of card board, or a piece of heavy canvas. I’ve also used a 2″ round piece, and this works well also, so you can put it on top of a regular pot or cake tin, or on a potter’s wheel. This will add further weight and height to the surface of the leaves and stem, so that your saffron plants will be taller. If you’re in a position where you’d be willing to invest in a huge saffron crop, you can buy small pots for as little as £5 per plant, though I’ve also seen a number of large pots, that cost more, for as little as £25.
What about making saffron balls on a hot tin?
The only problem with this is that you have to use hot water, and some extra care. I’ve never had luck with this, but if you’re absolutely confident you can grow saffron yourself that doesn’t give off too much smoke, and the temperature is safe for human consumption, then why not try it?

Please don’t start selling saffron if you don’t want to! I’d be surprised if the saffron you grow now had any use for it now. The saffron you grow now is simply a part of the family, and the other people who grew it when you were growing it in the 1940s and 1950s can’t come close to you in terms of how they feel about its importance or what it means to them.
