“It lowers your blood pressure by reducing spikes in your blood pressure. If you drink two cups of saffron-flavored coffee, your blood pressure and blood sugar will both be slightly lower,” says Thomas R. Kelsay, Jr., MD, MBA, of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, CT, who has studied saffron in the clinic during the past 20 years.
Other studies have shown that saffron may help lower risk factors for heart disease, too. One study of more than 2,000 subjects in Europe found a significant reduction in triglyceride levels. This suggests that saffron may help lower the rate of coronary artery disease, since blood fats have long been associated with coronary artery disease.
Studies have shown that the benefits of saffron have been found in both men and women. Yet only recently have researchers been able to observe the benefits of saffron on these types of diseases. “We’ve known about saffron’s benefits in skin conditions, such as acne, for a while, but I think it’s the first time we’ve been able to observe that saffron’s blood pressure lowering effects are seen in heart disease, hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Kelsay. This research was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Another benefit of saffron includes improved sleep. Saffron might increase the quality of a person’s sleep when ingested within 5 hours of bedtime. But most people who are trying to maximize their sleep don’t get this benefit without supplementing with saffron. And studies show that people who take saffron have higher sleep efficiency—they sleep a little less—than those who don’t take saffron.
But is saffron a good choice for preventing diabetes in women or men? Dr. Kelsay finds there are some important caveats to consider.
“There’s not enough evidence to really determine that, at least when it comes to reducing diabetes risk, if it’s in men or women, that saffron is the better choice,” said Dr. Kelsay. In his own research, he and colleagues have found that women who consume more than eight cups of saffron at bedtime have about twice the risk of Type 2 diabetes as people who consume no saffron at all.
