I would say it’s important to harvest within a year and it’s important to buy quality, which means we need to plant lots of seed and cultivate it. We have around 800-1000 different varieties of seffron, and we’ve bought different seed from all across India and selected the best seed. We’ve spent around $30,000 on plants and seed. We spend at least $10,000 to have all the seed planted right now. After we’ve bought the seed and we take them through their certification process, then we’re allowed to grow.
Thirdly, you need to have a plan. We started out with a $300 investment in our seed, and that’s it, that’s how far we have come. Once seeds arrive at our farm and we plant them, then we go into the certification process, which is done before we go forward. We don’t grow severest grade severest-grade and we don’t buy the best of severest grade in this country, we buy from all levels of grade.
Now, there are many ways in which you can start your own farm. But you have to be very careful about whether it’s the right farm for the right amount of money.
