The Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar have been importing saffron for centuries, as have India’s neighbours Pakistan and Pakistan. India’s southern state, Rajasthan, has imported thousands of kilos of saffron over the years due to lack of supplies from neighbouring India. It is believed that all saffron from India is grown in the state of Rajasthan, India’s most populous. In addition to Rajasthan, saffron has also been grown in the neighbouring states of Jamshedpur and Chhattisgarh.
What is it used for? According to its proponents, saffron is a powerful natural healing agent that purifies and invigorates the skin, heals wounds, detoxifies the body and prevents burns. It does this through a process known as lysosomal inhibition which produces chemical compounds, including thujone, that can be converted into an anti-inflammatory molecule called TNF-alpha. A study on the effect of saffron extract applied to wounds on rat eyes found that both the healing factor and anti-inflammatory effect could also be achieved when saffron is applied topically.
