A sin to eat pork is taking meat of another and eating it, whether or not the animal is of the species of the same species as oneself. “Pigs have no sense of taste” (Qur’an 8:28). In addition, because of the animal-killing practices of the Prophet Muhammad, “Muslims will not eat anything that has been killed by a dog, or a cat, or a sheep.” (Qur’an 5:32.)
It is clear from the above that Muslims do not eat pork, and it is the right approach to this issue. As we have already quoted Muhammad as saying, it is a sin to take pork from an animal whose owner has committed an unlawful act.
However, there are many different animals for an individual Muslim to eat — pigs, chickens, or any other type of animal for that matter. It is permissible for Muslims to eat pork on one occasion only if they know it was the meat of an animal slaughtered using a different animal.
However, one Muslim who has done so may eat pork by choice, because of the above. For example, he may eat the meat of any non-kosher animal on one occasion with his Muslim guests and it would be permissible for him to eat pork on another occasion just as well. There is no prohibition against it simply because the animal was sacrificed on another occasion. This is another argument for avoiding pork if it was done by a Muslim. However, Muslims must not eat meat from animals whose people have committed an unlawful act, or if they are unable to obtain it from a Muslim.
Some say that Muslims must use caution in eating pork after it is slaughtered by a non-Muslim, as a Muslim may kill a non-Muslim. However, such acts are prohibited only if done in anger (Qur’an 2:222).
Punishment in the Qur’an, Sura and Hadith
Some scholars consider that a Muslim should be given a choice between punishment for the meat of an animal, or for its meat being eaten:
It is a sin on man to eat meat of a non-Muslim, just as a person who kills a non-Muslim may suffer punishment from Allah on the Day of Judgement. Thus, man must take precaution in eating from non-Muslim animals.
