There’s no real rule, except that the person who has to win has to be willing to take some pretty big risks. When you decide to get into the sport of rodeo, you have to be willing to do things that you might not do in your regular, everyday life.
How does your horse get into the ring?
When you’re at home, watching your horse in person, maybe it’s not the easiest thing in the world to do.
You have to be in the ring with them. You have to be a part of a horse’s life, and be able to listen to everything that happened in that life to make sure they make their place in that rodeo. And that means sometimes you have to have to pull their leg and pull them from the ring.
That’s why it’s vital that you train them properly. They need you to have as much familiarity with their environment as they need you to have with them. You have to be an advocate for their well-being as much as you need them. You might have to pull somebody from the ring. And it depends on how much you care about their career.
What do you find that you like about a rodeo — anything the horse does?
When I got my first horse, it was like I was getting a brand new car. I didn’t have any experience having one yet, and I was kind of excited to get an experience that I’d never had. It took me a while to figure out what I loved about that.
Is there anything you don’t like about the sport of rodeo?
To this day, I find myself a little bit annoyed when an individual takes a horse that has not yet proven itself in the ring, and has not yet proved that he is a great performer or has a great sense of how to put him in the ring, and shows him a bunch of maneuvers that he might not understand. He takes a horse who has been beaten by some very talented person and puts him in a position — and that’s probably the most important thing — where he’s getting beat by someone who knows how to do it, and is more experienced. It shows me that he needs to work at that level before he can go in there.
When you can’t train a horse, do you still have any respect for the horse?
I’ve got an enormous amount of respect for the horse. They take the time to sit up in their stall and let me see
