The U.S. Army is developing new technology to give soldiers a 360-degree video view around them while their legs are strapped behind them.
The new technology, which the Army is calling the Multiview, would be able to show videos and images for more than 180 degrees around the soldiers. It would give soldiers the ability to see around and around in front of them, but in 360-degree rotation, rather than a single angle.
“That would be very, very cool, very, very important,” Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Williams, associate director, Combat Technology, said in a release. “When you have the ability to do multiple perspectives, you make the combat team stronger and able to see the target better. I think that would be very, very useful for the Army, but also for many other branches of the government if you can have that ability.”
The new “Multiview” technology would see images shot in high-resolution, using a 360-degree camera that a soldier or other user wears on the neck. The camera would focus on the battlefield, using a video lens to determine where a soldier needs to look, so he or she doesn’t have to move their head around to get the image from one eye to the other.
