It all depends on what you’re looking for but here are some general guidelines and a few general tips on when it’s time to give guitar lessons. You will always need someone good with you to pick out the guitar and to help you set up what you need. There’s usually a time to teach a beginner and a time not to teach a beginner. The reason being a beginner doesn’t have to be someone with an advanced level of knowledge either. Just something like someone you can pick something up with that is slightly better than someone with a basic level knowledge on guitar. How long should you hold those open strings? No one really knows for sure but the general rule of thumb is three inches is as long as you need. It’s all about your playing as long as the guitar sounds good and your tone is there. After you’ve picked a guitar up, take it into the band to play. The most important thing here is to make sure the chords work. Don’t use what you think are your best chords. Be flexible and take what works for the song. That could be a 5/4 line chord or a 9/8 line chord or whatever works for the song. If you’re in a band and you’re learning chord progressions, practice each chord and see if something new is coming out of it. For example, if a song calls for a 4×9 and in the current chord progression, you have to go through the 4×9 and then the 1×9. You just might discover that you can change the song by putting on a new chord. If you have a song that’s all G7, you might discover that you can use the 5/4 in place of the 5th (which would be G7) instead.
