How did it come about?
It’s not really the hardest solo I’ve ever made in my life! I’ve done a lot of them, but I haven’t really done the hardest solo like when you’re listening to me play it for the first time.
What is the hardest piece of guitar technique you’ve ever learned?
Most of my guitar technique has come from the solos I played in bands. It’s just stuff I picked up on and had been doing ever since I played the guitar.
You are the vocalist, guitarist, and founding member of the legendary rock band The Strokes. What is the weirdest thing people have asked you to do to drum?
I’ll say the most bizarre question I’ve ever given anyone: “Why do you sound like the drummer?”
Which of your favorite bands is most likely to come back to you for your next tour?
In this age of what is considered alternative rock, there is so much that you’ll always hear from bands that I’ve covered. People have talked to me about doing a new solo album and it’s something I’m very interested in and would love to play. But I’m happy to be an artist in a certain way and to still do my part in pushing the boundaries of what the pop/rock music world can do and is willing to do.
What is your favorite non-fictional song from any of your songs?
I don’t have one favorite song, I just really love this song (The Strokes, “Let’s Dance”). It’s such an incredible song, and I thought a lot about it when I wrote the intro from my solo album. It’s so amazing that I got to do this and it makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something, and I never thought I could do something so cool.
What has your favorite song done to you this year?
The best one would have to be R.E.M., because it makes me feel like I’ve been in my car, in front of the mirror, and that I have this special magic in me or somebody. I’ve been in my car and had it go with the song and the song goes with the car. I had to go with it that way.
What’s your dream album title?
A song I’ve been working on for like 10 years, but it’s a little too obvious to choose, and I’ll be honest, if I was told it would
