I always felt that it was important to have a good teacher when I started out that not just picked me up on a guitar but also taught me the things you have to do and learn in order to be successful in the music business. I think that’s what an amazing coach is for an aspiring musician.
What were your first lessons like? I remember they had only a few of us playing the first chords and I didn’t know what to play yet. I’m glad I have got these lessons now because it will take me much longer to learn how to play the guitar because there has been so much time in the process.
How long have you been playing guitar for? I’ve played guitar since I was 6 years old – I got my first guitar at 7 and a few years later I got my second guitar. I started playing at 8 – I played piano when I was about 11 and at 12 I moved to a guitar club. It was a really good club and I got to know a lot of my guitar heroes there and also met people there who had been playing guitar for many years.
How have you started to build your own band? I’ve been practicing for a while now and when I did I tried to do it without any of the other students I used to take lessons from. I also didn’t have a guitar at home because of the money I earn working in a restaurant. I would have come up with a new idea each time I had to practise and I would just want to start playing. Then I had to find a way to spend it and so I started to do things like taking the bus. I’ve also got a lot of equipment and I don’t play any cheap. On the outside I feel the worst and on the inside all I have is me. I am in a really lucky situation – I didn’t come from a poor background. When I started to work I also discovered that it didn’t matter how much music I studied. If I was to play guitar I would need the best teachers I could find.
What is it about guitar that attracts you? It’s one of the oldest instruments and it’s also one of the simplest and most accessible to learn. It has a lot of tone on it and it’s very easy to learn. I find all the pieces of music I love – rock, jazz, pop and classical – are very similar in terms of the technique and also in terms of how they sound.
