In the last decade, the proportion of non-standard chords has increased and even in guitar groups, some chords are being taken out of the standard chord vocabulary entirely. The following table lists the chords that have been classified as “non-standard” in the following music industry publications:

(1) The Guitarist’s Manual, No. 3, by Mark R. Smith: This list contains some major names such as F, E, A and C. As well as some guitarists (John Scofield, Steve Von Till, Steve Kimock, Bob Cauty), it lists others (E.J. Hass, Tom Marshall, Brian Reedy, Robert Trujillo) as well.

(2) The Guitarist’s Manual, No. 3, by Mark R. Smith: As of early 2005, the list of standard chords in that text is gone and replaced by a list of chords that have not been classed by any of its authors as standard—but are nevertheless included. All of them are listed in red above. The list of chord names that are only included in this list is as follows: C5, C6, C7, A5, G7, A5, G6, A5, B7, B4, C7, C7, F#5, G5, F#4, F#5. All of these are included in the list of non-standard chords.

(3) The Guitarist’s Manual, No. 4, by Mark R. Smith: This text is the last in that list of standard chords. Now, although this text contains chords from all over the standard chord vocabulary, the C, E, A and B7 chords have been removed from the list. The list of chord names that are only included in this list is as follows: D7, F#4, G7, F#8, Cmaj7, C, C#, G, F, G#4, B3, Am7, C7, G11, C7 and E7.

(4) The Guitarist’s Manual, No. 5: This text covers all of the chord vocabulary that was previously covered by that list of standards. Only the C7 and G7 of this text have been removed.

(5) The Guitarist’s Guide, No. 1, by Mark R. Smith: The guitarists who were listening to this version of the manual should have noticed that
