No, it is not. It is a hard skill; I’ve never been able to play music like it, to play it more quickly, to play in tune, and to play for more than 2 hours straight without getting really tired. It would have been so much easier if I had been taught it from the beginning (which I haven’t) or if it had been taught by teachers who had the basic knowledge. The way guitar teachers teach today, we simply don’t have the time or ability to teach all the basic skills needed to play a whole lot better than kids and adults learn playing traditional music on a daily basis. Instead, we teach students to learn by putting them in a position where they can’t figure something out, and then getting them out of that position.

As an adult in a college or trade school, for example, I can hear the obvious problem with that approach. The kid who is going to graduate from college in four years knows that she won’t be able to learn all the skills she’ll need to get the same degree and move up the ranks in the business world, so she’s either taking lots of classes, which can be very boring, and making sure she finishes them before starting on the next degree, or she’s skipping through the entire curriculum, because it’s so overwhelming.

What it comes down to, then, is how do you teach music theory and practice to a person who simply has no experience playing music?

When I was teaching kids to play a song, I always wanted them to play the notes in time. If they played wrong, I’d tell them to pause and listen. I wanted a clear way to teach them what they heard. This was done through lots of practice, and lots of “choreography.” “Choreographical” has come to mean “something that gets them working hard,” so that they learn something new at the same time that a band is practicing something at the same time.

Choreographic practice is all about practice with different styles of music, playing one chord while another plays another, changing in tone, and so on, or different time signatures, rhythms, and key signatures (just like it sounds, as I explain in my book How to Play a Whole Lot Better).
