To answer no, the only true answer is, “Do you believe Matt Bennett did not play ventriloquism?”
That is, to answer yes to the first question, the only true answer is that Bennett did perform ventriloquism.
To answer no to the questions posed, the only true answer is that Matt Bennett did not play ventriloquism.
To be honest, though, I would be the first to say that I have no idea what Matt Bennett did. I haven’t actually seen the dummy, and it’s not hard to imagine that the dummy could have been a real person, with the same physical attributes as Bennett himself.
And yet, I believe Bennett performed ventriloquism to help an audience get a laugh from the fact that they weren’t laughing. I believe Bennett did it because he thought that it was hilarious and because it was funny to him, as a non-ventriloquist. And in the very same breath that he says, “I am a ventriloquist dummy,” he also claims he would not have done it if it wasn’t funny.
I think there’s a lot of truth to both sides of that. But I don’t see the dummy — in or out of costume — as Matt Bennett.
It’s not me — it’s a dummy. And the fact that it’s Matt Bennett who plays the dummy — in my mind, at least — makes me happy. I think it is really great entertainment.
I think those who believe in whether the dummy is Bennett or not are missing the point. The dummy, Matt Bennett in costume — though he is an ordinary person, not a dummy — he doesn’t belong in any way to Matt Bennett. He doesn’t do what he does to help Matt Bennett get laughs. His role is to help people — whether in the form of a human, not-a-dummy, or in a fake persona — get more laughs. This is the role he plays for a reason.
