Because the most famous ventriloquist is unknown to all but a few select historians, we can only guess about the best ventriloquist.
That would be Charles Randal Swayze, born on March 28, 1919. Swayze was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to an affluent family.
He received an undergraduate degree from the University Of Cincinnati, and in 1938 he received his master’s degree and his doctorate in speech therapy in Chicago from the university.
In 1955, Swayze was chosen by a group of people involved in the ventriloquism movement to be the first ventriloquist to serve as an expert on the subject. He was also invited by the American ventriloquist magazine, Ventriloquia, to give lectures on the subject.
In 1965, in the midst of the 1960s’ national ventriloquism craze, Swayze wrote a book called Ventriloquia: The Art of Ventriloquism in the 21st Century.
The book is no longer available, but Swayze’s ventriloquism class remains listed at his name on the course catalog of New Haven Community College (then the New Haven Colony College).
There’s also a website called Charles Randal Swayze: The Oldest Oldest Voice in the World, which lists his class at the New Haven Community College and also lists his name on the course description.
Swayze studied with a number of people including Charles W. Lechner, who in the 1930s and 1940s taught Swayze, and other people associated with the Ventriloquism movement.
Swayze’s classes were taped and available to anyone to see.
Swayze spoke five times to his class in the summer of 1965.
Swayze, of course, would go on to become the best known ventriloquist in the world, but there are a number of other famous ventriloquists who have also made great names for themselves and served as great teachers.
