A ventriloquist dummy is a special kind of dummy whose name means “mouth of the devil”. They are often created for the children’s entertainment industry. These dummy’s have a set of “dick bones” (called larynxes) which they put at a certain position and a sound “voice” that they put into the mouths, where they will make a dummy say or act a certain way (e.g. a fake baby, a fake monkey, a fake octopus, a fake pig, or a fake cow).

Most common in human puppetry is the doll. Dummies usually start by being made of clay that is later turned into a material that can be attached to the dummy’s legs. A dummy also usually has its own movements, body and voice; they are not puppets or props. They are usually made out of clay when they are still baby-sized and then they begin to grow up. The dummy’s movements range from just moving their head left and right to actually saying words. They tend to mimic human speech patterns, so their mouths usually stay closed when the actor mouths the lines. Most often, the actor makes a noise like a sigh.
When the dummy is wearing a costume, he/she wears a mask. This is not an action-figure or toy. A dummy puppet is actually an imitation of a living human being. Although its face and body can be changed, it can have its features still the same.
The name “dummy’s” comes from the word “dummy” and the French désiré, which means dummy or clown.
