HOLT: They’re both going to end up where they want to be with each other. That part is out of the hands of the writers, but both of them, hopefully, do end up like what we all want to see: The two heroes together.
Is it true that you’re working on a movie based on the Batman: Arkham games?
HOLT: We are actually working on what was called “Batman + Robin,” which is an animated short based around a story from DC’s graphic novels, and it was produced by Matt Reeves. And he’s directing it at Warner Bros. We’re talking about a short — we’ve not decided on it’s length yet, but it’s definitely not going to be the entire graphic novel.
It seems like this could be on the horizon. What’s been your process for developing this project from a writer’s perspective, and what kind of pressure will this place on the story to make it a big one?
HOLT: The creative pressure of making a movie is going to be tremendous on Batman and Robin. It’s a big job. There are many aspects to it. It’s so different from any other superhero movie. If we didn’t come out of it well, there are a million people who would never want to watch a Batman movie. There are so many parts, it’s going to be a very unique experience. One of the great things about the Batman universe is because so often it’s sort of a very limited universe with a lot of superheroes, and we’re doing a version of that where the villains are not only more numerous, but they’re stronger and they’re smarter and they’re cunning. So there’s a very large number of different aspects to the movie that will challenge us enormously.
The first half of the movie is still coming together, so you’d imagine you’ll start in the second half.
HOLT: I think if the first half has succeeded, it will be really interesting to see what the full movie will be. And that is really up to us — it’s not something we’ve decided on.
You guys had some really great cast members for Batman Beyond. Can you tell us about Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne, or is he a little bit of a red herring? When will we finally get to learn about some of the supporting characters like Catwoman or The Scarecrow?
HOLT: He is sort of a red herring with regards to the
