A story, of course. And a story in which you have to be the one pulling the strings, pulling the strings you’re pulling at, in order to be able to pull. But I don’t think that’s true. And my point was the stories you put in your life are very individual. Like for example, a story of mine in which I’m not pulling the strings, like for example, is this story about my brother-in-law and his life in prison. I told this story at a dinner and people said it was so funny it was unbelievable. He did the best he could while he was there, not like him, not like most prisoners, he wasn’t trying to kill other people. It’s a story that’s very individual.

What’s the greatest obstacle to becoming a great playwright?
For me, it’s simply the fact that people don’t like to hear you tell a play. Because once you’re in, you’re a playwright already. A lot of times, people would say, “Oh I love your play, but I can’t hear it,” or sometimes a play will be a piece of work for us, and you’ve written, like, three pages, and people want to listen to that. But it’s just the fact that people don’t like what a play is about.
You’re speaking not just of theater, but of literature as a whole. Do you think fiction is more important than playwrightly formality? Do you think playwriting can be that serious or do you think it can be a lot of fun?
I think playwriting can be that serious, but it can also be fun, like for me, for example, I think that I can be more serious than many writers of fiction. Not even writers of fiction by the way, authors. So I’m not saying they’re not serious, but they’re not my kind. I’m talking about writers who are writing in that way, or writers who are not writing in that way. Because it’s so much fun. But the way I see it, if a writer writes about an event that happened in their life, they’re actually writing about that event, that time, and in fact, that person, because in that moment they’re describing all that happened, and they’re writing about the emotions of the individual person who experienced that event.
