The world has learned a few important lessons from the Russian presidential race, in recent decades.
One is that the best way to prevent future elections from resembling the 2012 American presidential election — which featured one of the most egregious violations of democracy during the course of the campaign, and another which was so egregiously unjustifiable that many voters did not recognize it — is to get government officials to understand just how fundamentally the current political system was damaged by these events.
That’s the challenge that President Donald Trump has put forward since he assumed office.
One of his first efforts was to get Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Then that same administration also hired a former assistant US attorney named John Dowd to lead the Russia investigation.
Both actions were taken in direct opposition to the wishes of the Russian government, which was trying hard to keep all this going:
