JKR: I think it was someone who had a fascination with the dark side of things with things like those things you see in Harry Potter and all those things, in terms of the dark side of magic and the dark arts, they were all just kind of dark. So that would lend itself very naturally to the need for dark magic, because they’re all kind of just different, like an evil version of the same thing.
So it’s a combination of both of those things.
JKR: And so, you know, that’s all really, really interesting. I mean, we can debate all day, and that’s going to be quite fun. What’s really interesting to me is there are no answers to that question, and I think that’s actually what the audience is there for.
Mmm. So, can you tell me how much of a surprise that is, because if you know, Harry Potter, one thing that we know all the way back to the beginning of the series is that this whole thing of magic has a dark side. I want to ask you how much of your own life you were prepared for this, and how much did you know about this before you started working on it.
JKR: Well, it was pretty obvious to me. I knew from day one that I didn’t want to write about magic that was actually happening in the real world because I thought that’s just not interesting. You know, this is about people doing what they’re supposed to do, and that’s what I was talking about when I was saying “magic is dark.”
I mean, it’s not just, I mean – just because something is dark, you want to do, like, we always get very excited about, “Oh, they’re going to do it this way,” but they just shouldn’t – you don’t need to do the way it always is.
This isn’t about, “Hey, it looks like we’re going to take magic out of school,” and the whole world gets darker.
