In a new, high-stakes fight, the nation’s largest airlines are attempting to block President Trump’s proposed federal budget.
On Friday, Trump issued an executive order instructing officials to cut both domestic and international airline funding. His budget would cut federal funding for charter flights by 20 percent, down to almost $1 billion. By contrast, it would fund the aviation fund through the Transportation Department for nearly $3.4 billion.
The airlines are fighting back.
They argue that the Trump administration has mischaracterized the proposed cuts, which would hit travel budgets across the board across the U.S.
This dispute follows an increasingly nasty fight over whether the president will get his way — and be able to change regulations in his own way — on a wide range of issues.
Trump has called the federal government “rigged” and vowed to repeal former President Obama’s signature health care law and a range of regulations he has put in place. He has called for the government to build an wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as a big tax cut.
