It is no one’s fault; indeed, it is not the fault of anyone but our own. What we are witnessing around us is the inevitable outcome of an epidemic of the sort described in The Tao of Self-Development. All we need to know is what to do and what not to do when life happens.

First, and most critically, we need to recognize it for what it is: the consequence of a mental disorder that we caused.

There is no escape.

That mental disorder is anxiety. It is that terrible feeling that comes with a lot of stress and difficulty in getting it under control.

It is the opposite of bliss.

And it is that dreadful, almost suicidal feeling that can destroy a person like no other physical injury ever has.

Why?

Because we don’t deal with it.

We just tell people ‘Go to bed, get up, see the kids, go to work’. And then we forget it. We forget what we do to try to get rid of it — we go out drinking, we eat out, or we put ourselves through stressful job interviews because it takes too much energy to stop.

In the end though, it’s nothing to do with us. It’s nothing to do with life. In fact, it could save me from being this miserable person I am now. I’ve come to understand, it was caused by myself.

We have all had experiences where we have been too anxious and have been the source of it. But because of an inability or lack of will, we do nothing about it. It becomes our mental reality.

And that is the reason for all the anger, resentment and hatred.

So, to begin to put on our lives again, we need to learn how to feel like a human being again.

But how to be a human being.

It was written about in an old book called The Four Minds that says the following:

“People are human; they are people; but they are not people because they cannot do what they naturally desire.”

It is our inability to let go that has caused us to act in a certain way. The difference is one thing we do and that is not going and doing something different. I have to remember that I do what I did when I was feeling anxious and this is not what I want to do anymore. Even if I wanted to change. Even if I thought it was something
