For me I would say it depends. I’ve seen a number of coaches who I think could do it and in some cases can do it but I’ve had coaches who could be just as good and just as fast as a couple of the guys that I had seen.
I’m sure the main thing there is getting a background in the sport.
You can be able to go out and run a 5k in 45 minutes if you have one or two prior runs that you’re really good at doing for two reasons:
It will teach you the running form you’ll need for the course. It will give you an idea of the distance you’re going to run. If you do a 5k that’s a pretty good indication.
If you’re going into a race where it’s 50 miles, you have to be an athlete that understands the distance and the pace of the race.
There are other factors involved, too. There are probably coaches who are good enough to do it. Then there are coaches who are able to do it and if you have the skills and ability to run it well I would put them in the upper class.

But there are also coaches who are in the lower-middle class. They don’t know the running style well enough or you can’t say the same about them. I have experienced coaches who can do a 5k in 45 minutes. What they don’t know is for the 5ks they have done, it’s like, how do I keep this up for 50 miles? You’re not going to be able to go out and run 50 miles without some skill. You’re going to have to know how to run fast or slow.
That says a lot in the coaching industry. There are so many things you can’t say in coach education in general.
I don’t have enough experience to say exactly when you stop and when you start. But you have to learn from the beginning. If you’re going to have to keep up, you have to know how to do it.
On top of that, it is an incredible opportunity to work with great people that want you to succeed in your coaching career. And that’s usually where the money is in coaching.
