In a series of “attacks” on bitcoin exchanges, and a series of attacks on bitcoin wallets, the hackers got their hands on bitcoin’s private keys (the numbers used to control a Bitcoin address) of over two million bitcoin users. As a result, the value of each bitcoin that the hackers stole—which is now worth $3,000—started to rise dramatically. With this newfound wealth, the hackers used it to pay for personal purchases online. They even set up a bitcoin gambling site with a betting pool on the value. And of course they got paid for their work.
