A common theory says that pole dancing comes from the fact that “women are taught to dance the way they feel when most men don’t”. The theory is that men see women at clubs and try to put on their best moves to impress them.
“We do this because it’s so physically taxing and exhausting. This has become less likely as dancers become more experienced and less of an object of male desire,” says Sorenson.
The theory also holds that a woman’s body becomes less and less attractive over time, whereas pole dancing’s is a high form of physical exertion which is very attractive.
Some even try to say that the women who participate in these male-dominated dances are being paid for it, while others think it’s more of a choice and that women can do it because it’s what they want because it puts them in control and they know what they like.
Whatever the reasons behind the dancing, it’s still a physically taxing activity, although the risk of injury is significantly lower than running or swimming.
What does pole dancing taste like?
According to the World Pole Dancing Touring Association, the best pole dancing clubs in the world offer everything a Pole Dancer could want in terms of: an international team, a social life and an excellent atmosphere.
While the women may have been taught to dance in a male dominated culture for most of their lives, the male dancers can be just as attractive to men as the women are.
The women are often treated with respect – as equals. The men might not be as physically able as women, but their attitudes are the same, and are even more so in some cases.
“If male dancers can be male friends, as well as being a dancer, pole dancers can also be very supportive of one another. There are clubs where both men and women are dancing – even if they are a man and a woman on the same dance floor, you’re sure to see both men and women smiling at each other,” says Sorenson:
“It might not always be the same gender on the dance floor, but the two will always feel like they have fun.”
However, some might argue the women tend to not be able to compete with male competitors, since they tend to only have a small dance experience.
