I don’t know the answer, and I wouldn’t know until I did. We have this problem in Australia, too, in regards to what we call the “fatcat” lifestyle. They call us “fatcats”, because fat people don’t do well in the modern economy.
But the evidence that people who earn $50,000 as the manager of an international chain are more likely to be fat compared to someone making $10,000 a year, according to the research done by University of Western Australia, suggests it doesn’t mean that we need to be afraid of making too much money. We may be better off trying to do it differently and live the fatcat life.
I am a little surprised by this.
But I think what I hear sometimes is “we should get on with it”. That would be the appropriate message. To get a start, I could suggest that the government set up a new agency with responsibility for the wellbeing of Australian workplaces, starting at the bottom, and then moving up to the top. As one example, there could be a focus on what works for individual workers. It would mean looking at the cost of health, and how some of the key costs of working are borne by employers.
I do understand some of the criticism of how much Australians are losing out in this economy. But the fact is that when employers spend money on people’s lifestyle choices, they are doing it for the good of their businesses. I think it is only a matter of time before more workers recognise this, and the cost is offset by the gains when employees live a healthier lifestyle. And when the benefits and rewards are big enough, those benefits may not be such a big issue.

When the U.S. Army announced that it would be selling the controversial M4 carbine to Taiwan this month, the reaction was one of outrage. But what, if any, benefit, if any, did the transfer offer to Taiwan?
The short answer is: nothing. The longer answer is that the U.S., under the Obama administration, seems to have decided that it has enough in the tank to be able to send arms to the island, if Taiwan’s government was able to meet its goals of establishing a political and military base on the island and making it an ally against China. That hasn’t happened yet, but
