Two of Britain’s biggest oil fields will be scrapped.
BP’s Brent fields will be capped at about 6,000 barrels per day for future use. BP’s U.S. wells will also see their production capped at 3.7 million barrels per day.
“The cost of developing offshore assets is becoming too high for the taxpayer,” the company said in a statement.
Ministers said new technology, notably a shift to shale gas, was helping them to “avoid the worst of the economic downturn.”
They announced the decision after consultation on the future of the fields.
It has been a difficult year for the oil industry.
A lack of money in the bank, along with falling oil prices, has had a major impact on companies. Many of those firms are thought to be on the brink of bankruptcy, though only one, Total, has actually gone bust.
‘Best practices’
BP said it would make good use of offshore wells with better technology, which would reduce the cost of oil production at its U.S. offshore sites.
Shell, too, plans to continue using offshore wells with existing technology to bring production back up.
It is understood that other firms will have to adjust their drilling strategies and plan their drilling operations based on market conditions.
The decisions come in response to falling oil prices.
