The former Virginia governor and Democratic candidate for Congress say they are quitting the race for Governor Virginia and the US House of Representatives in the wake of the violent protests in her region.
The couple said their children were traumatized by the “shameful incident” at a Charlottesville protest that left one woman dead and several injured.
Mrs McCrory said her decision was based on her “spirit of inclusion”.
Virginia race relations are currently the subject of intense discussion after deadly clashes last month between white supremacists and counter-protesters.
Republican Ed Gillespie hopes to defeat Democrat Ralph Northam in the state’s second Presidential electoral vote.
Speaking in a statement, Mrs Lippert and Mr McCrory added that they did not believe Virginia’s race crisis was a “crisis at all”, but an opportunity for change.

According to CNN, a crowd at a rally for Mr Gillespie waved Confederate flags.
Both Mr McCrory and Ms Lippert were born in Georgia and raised in the US. They both live in North Carolina.
‘Heartfelt apology’
“I and my husband believe in inclusion. We don’t think racism is acceptable and we want to ensure that our children are treated with respect regardless of their race,” Mrs McCrory said in a statement.
“It is with profound sorrow that, following the tragic events in Charlottesville, we have asked to suspend our campaign.

“This decision is a reflection of who I am. I am a mother of two children. I care deeply about the safety of our children.
“I have asked my wife to step aside as my campaign’s Executive Director and have instructed her to resign her position with the campaign.
“I do not support or agree with what happened in Charlottesville.”
