How many guitar chords are there? – Learn Guitar Favorites Brad Paisley

A guitar chord is just a note that is one fret above, one fret below and one fret higher than the root (E).

A triad, by contrast, is any combination of notes. For example, a major triad is four notes (E, A, G, B) plus a fifth note (A), and it is called a minor triad (3,2,5,6) — note: note2 and note6. So four notes and a fifth note plus an extra note are called a minor triad. A major triad contains three notes (E, A, G and B), A minor triad contains two notes (E and A), and so forth.

One way to think about the harmonic scale is to represent it as a series of notes that are all “below” the root, so any given chord is a diminished seventh (i.e., a note that is the seventh note from the root).

In the harmonic scale, every note above the root has a value of 1, and every note below that has a value of -1.

For example: 1 note higher in the harmonic scale means that the note is 1 fret higher than the root. 1 note higher in the harmonic scale means that the note is 2-1/2 high. If a note has a value of A, it’s an 8th (A), if it has a value of 6, it’s a 6th (A), and that’s it. If a note has a value of E, it’s a B.

Because chord progression is a series of notes that fall on the fifth note between two beats of a bar, no chord progression can make any sense without reference to fundamental tuning.

In this post, I’m assuming you have basic understanding of musical and harmonical concepts and are now comfortable understanding the basic concepts of chords. (For more in-depth information and explanation of chord theory and chord progressions, I recommend listening to some songs by Taylor Swift!)

It’s important to note that chords don’t exist in the same way as musical notes or bass lines.

For example, let’s assume A is a root note. A has an value of 1 and an equal value in root, third and fifth. A fifth note has a value of -1 and a value of 0 (or the note you put next to the root, in our case, E). A chord only exists in reference to the root note when there
