The Los Angeles Board of Redevelopment (LARB) was created in 1935 to create a plan for a new development in West Hollywood known as the Sunset Strip (now Sunset Boulevard) Project. The LARB formed the Sunset Strip Land Company after establishing the Los Angeles City Planning Department and a subcommittee on Planning. By the mid-1930s, the West Hollywood development would be one of the largest in the world, though it was more in scale than population. The Sunset Strip Land Company was a massive mixed-use redevelopment organization. It operated for more than a decade, from 1930 to 1956.
The Sunset Strip Land Company was part of the larger Los Angeles Redevelopment Agency, a quasi-state agency formed to take over land held in public parks and other city-owned assets.
